In-street school crosswalk signs

We want to make the trip to school safer for young children and families. We’re piloting new in-street school crosswalk signs.

The signs are designed to go in the middle of the street at a school crosswalk. The signs make the crosswalk more visible and lower driving speeds. They also remind drivers to stop for crossing pedestrians.

The signs are being used where:

  • There are safety concerns, including speeding and drivers not stopping for pedestrians
  • There is a lot of vehicle and pedestrian traffic
  • School safety patrols are present before and after school

In-street school crosswalk signs are approved by the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada. The signs are used in other Canadian cities, like Brandon and Calgary, to improve pedestrian safety.
