Building Energy Disclosure Project

Winnipeg has a climate target to meet or exceed net zero emissions by 2050. Buildings currently account for 44.4 percent of community-wide greenhouse gas emissions.

The Building Energy Disclosure Project started in 2020. The project invites local building owners to share annual energy use information for inclusion on the public Disclosure Map. This information provides a starting point, or benchmark, to use in future emission reduction plans.

Participants in the program receive several benefits, including:

  • A personalized energy performance scorecard
  • Information on available incentives through various organizations
  • Recognition in the annual project report

Why participate?

You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Benchmarking is the first step in increasing a building’s energy efficiency. Energy efficient buildings are environmentally friendly and less expensive to operate.

Participants receive an energy performance scorecard for each registered building per year. The scorecard tracks energy usage year over year, and shows how the building compares to similar ones in the city. It can help building owners with planning for future emission reductions.

There is no cost to be a part of the project. Owners who participate can demonstrate leadership in supporting climate action and data transparency.

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is an online tool developed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The tool allows building owners to measure and track how much energy and water they use and how much waste they produce. Manitoba Hydro accounts and meter numbers can be linked directly to the Portfolio Manager.

Requirements

Your building must be:

  • In city limits
  • At least 20,000 square feet
  • At least 70 percent occupied
  • Commercial or institutional according to the program guide

All participants must be willing to share their full energy profile through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.

Registration

Step 1: Create an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account

Step 2: Register your building
