Accessibility

The City of Winnipeg is committed to designing programs and services that work for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

Learn about the City's Accessibility Plan

Accessibility

Accessibility refers to people's ability to access a place, service or product.

Accessibility issues are far reaching and affect everyone from parents pushing strollers, to newcomers who struggle with reading English, to people manoeuvering large rolling delivery carts, to people with both temporary and permanent mobility, sensory and agility limitations. Accessibility also affects all aspects of how we live, work and play.

Age friendly

An age friendly city encourages active ageing by optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.

In practical terms, an age friendly city adapts its structures and services to be accessible to and inclusive of older people with varying needs and capabilities.

Mobility

Mobility refers to the efficient movement of people and goods in the urban environment.

Universal design

Universal design is a concept that aims to produce places and products that are accessible to everyone.

In an urban context this could mean that buildings, sidewalks and other public facilities are accessible to all people, with or without physical, cognitive or sensory limitations.

The underlying principle is that while accommodating people who may travel using assistive devices to help navigate and move you are also creating an environment that is more pleasant and easier to use for everyone.
