Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower
Plug in. Power up. Stay safe.
Lithium-ion batteries power many of our devices at home, including phones, tablets, power tools, e-bikes, and more. By following a few simple safety tips, we can prevent fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.
- Buy products with a safety certification mark. Choose battery-powered devices that display a recognized safety certification mark, such as UL, ETL, or CSA. These marks show the product has been tested and meets important safety standards.
- Charge devices safely. Only use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
- Take extra care with larger batteries. Charge e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits. These batteries are larger and store more energy. If they fail, fires can grow quickly and spread.
- Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a 4R Winnipeg Depot.
Smoke Alarm for Every (SAFE) Family program
Homeowners without working smoke alarms may be eligible to have one battery-operated smoke alarm installed for free through the SAFE Family program.
If you are a renter, it is your landlord's responsibility to install and maintain a working smoke alarm in your residential rental property, as per Fire Prevention By-Laws.
