River flooding protection

The Province of Manitoba provides regular flood forecasts until the flood event passes. Our engineers use each update to adjust the level of response required using the City’s Flood Manual.

The Flood Manual uses a data set of known actions or procedures required to fight a flood. This data set is based on geographical identifiers such as location and elevation. We update the database each year to ensure we have accurate data to plan our response.

Flood protection infrastructure

We have made many investments in permanent flood protection since the flood of 1997. This includes:

  • Primary and secondary dikes
  • Land drainage improvements
  • Combined sewer system upgrades
