When you need a development permit

Detached garages and accessory structures larger than 14 m2 (150 sq. ft.) accessory to any use other than a single or two-family dwelling need a development permit.

Refer to development permits for a complete list of requirements and exemptions.

 

When you need a building permit

Detached garages and accessory structures greater than 10 m2 (108 sq. ft.) need a building permit.

Note: Confirm development permit and other supporting approval requirements before applying for a building permit.

 

Electrical & plumbing installations

If a detached garage or accessory structure will have electrical or plumbing services installed, trade permits are needed.

Note: You need a separate electrical permit for all detached garages and carports.
