Apply to be a Writer-in-Residence

Winnipeg Public Library invites applications for the position of Writer-in-Residence (WiR) for 2025-26.

Winnipeg Public Library is seeking applications to be the 2025-2026 Writer-in-Residence. 

The Writer-in-Residence works with emerging Manitoba writers through individual consultations online, in person, by email and by phone. The Writer-in-Residence also offers group workshops and a writing circle. The residency includes time to work on a personal writing project and an office at Millennium Library.  

The program is offered province-wide thanks to the support of the Manitoba Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism. 

The residency will begin October 1, 2025 and run for seven months, subject to funding. The Writer-in-Residence will spend at least 15 hours per week on public consultation work. The remaining weekly hours are for programs and time to work on their own writing. 

Criteria: The successful applicant must have had at least two professionally published books as well as previous experience in teaching, mentoring, as a manuscript evaluator or editor. Preference will be given to Manitoba residents. 

Salary: $3,570 per month 

Application: Your letter of application must include the following: 

  1. Your history of literary publications in poetry, drama, fiction, and/or non-fiction 
  2. A statement on your personal mentoring philosophy 
  3. Your experience in developing and delivering writing or editing courses or workshops 
  4. Description of the personal writing project to be worked on during the residency 
  5. Description of two workshops for the public to be offered during the residency. Include title, target audience, description and expected outcomes. 
  6. References from a literary professional (e.g. writer, publisher) and from an individual or organization you have provided mentorship to  
    • References should be in the form of a letter or brief written statement, and focus on your mentoring and/or editing skills 
    • Please include the reference’s contact information for selection committee follow-up
