Suggestion for purchase

Winnipeg Public Library works to build a diverse collection. If you’re interested in a title that’s not in our catalogue, you can suggest one and we’ll consider purchasing it.

Customers with a Winnipeg Public Library card can suggest titles. You can submit up to five (5) suggestions per month. Please submit a title only once.

Winnipeg Public Library’s Materials Selection Statement (PDF, 711KB) outlines how we select titles. We welcome suggestions such as:

  • Authors, titles, or subjects of interest to you that would also be of interest to others; and/or
  • Items of local interest, relating to the geographic area of Winnipeg or Manitoba.

We will not consider:

  • Very popular and best-selling authors or well-reviewed blockbuster films. We order these anyway. If we already have books by popular authors, you can assume that we will order the next ones. Check the library catalogue periodically to see if it’s there.
  • Textbooks or academic books
  • Titles that are not yet available (in pre-publication or currently in theatres)
  • Titles older than two years from date of production, or those that are no longer available (out of print). For older items, you may wish to request an Interlibrary loan

We will reject suggestions that do not meet these criteria.

You can also visit any Winnipeg Public Library branch and ask for a print version of this form.

We’ll send an automatic email to let you know we’ve received your suggestion.

Search our online catalogue approximately 3-4 weeks after your submission.

We are not able to buy all suggested titles.

We receive a very high volume of suggestions and will no longer place holds on suggested titles that are purchased, nor do we contact you to inform you of our decision.
