Inspections are needed for all plumbing, HVAC distribution, and sprinkler systems on:

  • commercial buildings
  • industrial buildings
  • multi-unit residential buildings
  • other structures (e.g. accessory storage structure)

An inspection must be performed before any plumbing and mechanical work, or portion of work, is covered and at final completion.

Make sure to get a permit before starting any new construction, demolition, addition or alteration to any part of a plumbing or mechanical/sprinkler system.

City inspectors review the following types of plumbing/mechanical installations:

  • potable water supplies & piping
  • drainage systems
  • venting systems
  • repair garages
  • storage garage exhaust
  • welding exhaust systems
  • roof drainage systems
  • kitchen exhaust systems
  • sprinkler systems
  • stand pipe systems
  • fire pumps
  • paint spray booths
  • dust collection systems
  • HVAC systems
  • fire dampers

This list does not include all types of construction or installation of equipment.

 

Mandatory inspection stages

Licensed plumbing and mechanical contractors/permit applicants must request an inspection at completion, and before covering, at each of the following stages when applicable to the project:

  • underground
  • rough in
  • final

Multiple progress inspections may be needed at each mandatory inspection stage based on the size, complexity and progress of the project.
