Identification requirements

The City of Winnipeg requires every voter to provide proof of their name and current address by showing identification. There are multiple ways to do this:

    Option 1 - One piece of government issued photo ID

    Show one original piece of identification with your photo, name and address. It must be issued by a government agency.

    Examples:

    • A valid driver’s license
    • Manitoba identification card
    • any other card issued by a government agency with your photo, name and current address

    Option 2 - Two pieces of ID

    Show two original pieces of authorized identification that together provide evidence of your name and current address. Both must have your name and at least one must have your current address.

    Examples (any combination):

    • Manitoba Health Services card
    • Manitoba Blue Cross card
    • credit card statement
    • utility bill

    List of additional accepted ID to prove your identity and address under Option 2

     From a government or government agency 

    • band membership card
    • birth certificate
    • Canadian citizenship card or certificate
    • Canadian Forces identity card
    • Canadian passport (accepted only as proof of identity)
    • card issued by an Inuit local authority
    • firearms licence
    • government cheque or cheque stub
    • government statement of benefits
    • health card
    • income tax assessment
    • Indian status card or temporary confirmation of registration
    • licence or card issued for fishing, trapping or hunting
    • Métis card
    • old age security card
    • property tax assessment or evaluation
    • social insurance number card
    • Veterans Affairs health care identification card

    From a health care facility or organization

    • identity bracelet issued by a hospital or long-term care institution
    • medical clinic card

    From a financial institution

    • bank statement
    • credit card
    • credit card statement
    • insurance certificate, policy or statement
    • mortgage contract or statement
    • pension plan statement
    • personal cheque

    From a private organization

    • residential lease or sub-lease
    • utility bill

    This list is not exhaustive and additional pieces of ID may be accepted. 

    If providing ID in accordance with Option 2, please remember that both must have your name and at least one must have your current address.

    A combination of the above examples would be sufficient.
