Homeowners need to get the correct permits for certain types of electrical work.

When you need an electrical permit

Per the Winnipeg Electrical By-law, an electrical permit is needed for:

  • Construction of electrical systems 
  • Alteration of electrical systems
  • Repair or extension of electrical systems

An electrical permit is not needed in an owner-occupied, single detached dwelling to:

  • Replace a light fixture, switch or receptacle if: 
    • installed in the same location as existing equipment
    • no modifications are needed to an existing bonded branch circuit with copper wiring
  • Install voice/data systems

 

Who can apply

Note: If electrical work will be completed by the homeowner, the electrical permit declaration (PDF, 251KB) is required.

Homeowners may not apply for the following installations:

  • Renewable energy systems (e.g. solar photovoltaic systems)
  • Work over 200 Amps
  • Electric vehicle chargers
  • Generators
  • Transfer switches
  • Indoor plant growth facilities
  • Electrical services
