Elmhurst Road and Fairmont Road Traffic Calming Project

La présente page n’a pas été traduite. Veuillez consulter la version anglaise ci-dessous.

Elmhurst Road and Fairmont Road have been identified as high-priority locations for traffic calming measures through our Residential Area Traffic Calming Program.

We're looking for your input on a proposed option to reduce high speeds on these streets.

Review the materials and take a short online survey by July 15, 2026.

If you have questions or require alternate formats to participate, please contact:

Proposed designs

We are proposing traffic calming measures on both Fairmont Road and Elmhurst Road.

  • Speed humps on Fairmont Road between Grant Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue
  • Speed tables on Elmhurst Road between Grant Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue

The expected cost to install traffic calming measures on these two streets is $75,500. These improvements will be funded through the Road Safety Improvement Program.

Existing conditions

Fairmont Road:

  • Fairmont Road is a two-lane, undivided, residential local street
  • It is bordered by ditches on either side
  • It has a chip-seal pavement surface
  • There are no sidewalks, so pedestrians must share the road with motor vehicles and bikes
  • There is parking on the west side of the street
  • The speed limit is 50 km/h
  • The daily traffic volume is 780-1,100 vehicles per day, which is on the higher end of what’s typical for local streets
  • Most of the homes along the street are single-family houses. There is also an apartment-style housing complex near Grant Avenue.
  • The street connects to the Harte Trail south of Ridgewood.

Elmhurst Road:

  • Elmhurst Road is a two-lane, undivided, residential street that is designated as a collector. However, the road is designed more like a local street.
  • It is bordered by ditches on either side
  • It has a chip-seal pavement surface
  • There is a sidewalk on the west side of the street
  • Bus Route 885 uses the street.
  • There is parking on the west side of the street
  • The speed limit is 50 km/h
  • The daily traffic volume is 1,800-1,970 vehicles per day, which isn’t unusual for a collector street but high for a local street.
  • Most of the homes along the street are single-family houses.
  • The street connects to the Harte Trail south of Ridgewood.

Need for traffic calming

These roads are high-priority locations for traffic calming measures.

On Fairmont Road:

  • We collected traffic data in April 2024
  • The 85th percentile speed, which is the speed at which 85 percent of motorists travel at or below, is approximately 55 km/h
  • Up to 340 vehicles travel 55 km/h or faster every day

On Elmhurst Road:

  • We collected traffic data in October 2021
  • The 85th percentile speed, which is the speed at which 85 percent of motorists travel at or below, is 56 km/h
  • About 440 vehicles travel 55 km/h or faster every day

Next steps

We're looking for input from residents to confirm that the proposed solution will work for the neighbourhood.

What we hear in this survey will help us update the design.

In late summer we will publish the survey results and present the final design.

Construction is expected early fall 2026.
