Hired Worker Information

Attending Training

All Election Officers must attend training. The processes and procedures change from election to election, and training will provide the necessary skills and information to perform the duties of your assignment.

Training sessions will take place in the second-floor conference rooms of the Susan A. Thompson Building at City Hall, 510 Main Street.

Each sessions lasts 2 hours and will begin at the scheduled start time. Attendees are advised to arrive 5-10 minutes early in order to check in and be ready for the start of their session.

City Hall is accessible via Winnipeg Transit, and there are numerous paid parking locations close by. Paid street parking is limited to two hours on weekdays until 5:30 p.m.. Street parking is free after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and for up to two hours on Saturdays.

Preparing for your shift

Election workers must stay at the voting location for their entire shift. You cannot leave the site, so bring enough food and drinks for the day.

You must arrive at your assigned location one hour prior to opening to help setup. The voting place will open promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Election Day.

Once you’ve arrived at your assigned location, you must meet with the Senior Voting Officer (SVO) and sign the attendance payroll sheet. Your paycheque will be sent by mail so please double check the address listed next to your name to ensure the information is accurate.

If you have further questions contact elections@winnipeg.ca.

Compensation

Your compensation includes payment for attending the mandatory training session. If you do not attend training, you will be removed from your assignment.

Pay is based on the role and assignment you are selected for. Payment will be sent by mail approximately one to two weeks after Election Day (October 28, 2026).

Payment for elections work will be sent by mail in the form of a cheque and cannot be collected in person. Cheques cannot be re-directed by Canada Post so please be sure that your address information is up to date when you sign the attendance payroll sheet. Direct deposit is not available.

Election Officers will not be issued a T4 slip and will not be taxed by the City, but workers are responsible for reporting the income on their income tax return.
