On October 28, 2026, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit arrested 26-year-old Sheldon NASKAPOW in connection with an aggravated assault investigation stemming from a violent, unprovoked aggravated assault which occurred in downtown Winnipeg on October 21, 2026.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., a man in his 60’s was walking along Edmonton Avenue near York Street when he was approached from behind by an unknown male. Without provocation, the suspect struck the victim with a piece of lumber, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect continued the assault, before stealing the victim’s shoes, baseball hat, and backpack and fleeing the area.

The victim was transported to hospital suffering from life-altering injuries.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation and subsequently identified NASKAPOW as a suspect.

On October 28, investigators located NASKAPOW in the area of Arlington Street and Ellice Avenue where he was taken into custody without incident. During his arrest, NASKAPOW lied about his identity. Eleven identity documents, not belonging to him, were seized by officers.

NASKAPOW is charged with the following:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Robbery
  • Public Mischief
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Possess Identity Document x 11
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking

NASKAPOW was detained in custody.
