Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for pedestrians, particularly children, so we're asking everyone to slow down, stay alert, and make safety a priority.
For motorists:
- Slow down and use extra caution in residential areas.
- Expect the unexpected: Watch for children who may suddenly cross the street or emerge from between parked vehicles.
- Be especially alert at intersections, crosswalks, and near schools, parks, and community centres.
- Minimize distractions and stay focused on the road.
For trick-or-treaters and parents:
- Use sidewalks and cross only at intersections or designated crosswalks. Make eye contact with drivers and even wait until they come to a complete stop before crossing.
- Wear reflective materials, carry a flashlight, or add glow sticks to costumes to improve visibility.
- Stay in a group whenever possible. Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.
- Avoid costumes, masks, or accessories that restrict vision or that could be a tripping hazard.
- Inspect all treats and discard anything that appears opened, damaged, or suspicious.
A reminder about imitation weapons:
Toy guns, swords, and other costume props can sometimes appear realistic, especially in low-light conditions. Be mindful to carry clearly identified costume accessories - we recommend bright colours or reflective tape.
And finally, if you do see anything that might be suspicious, give us a call. We’re here to help everyone enjoy a safe and happy Halloween!
