Information contained in our media releases may relate to issues of violence or trauma, which could be distressing for some individuals. Be mindful of your well-being and consider if engaging with this content is appropriate for you.

The Winnipeg Police Service is aware of the reported cybersecurity incident involving a third-party platform used by Crime Stoppers. We recognize the seriousness of this matter, particularly given the critical importance of protecting the anonymity, confidentiality, and safety of individuals who provide information to assist investigations.

While the Winnipeg Police Service and Crime Stoppers have worked closely together for many years in support of community safety, Crime Stoppers operates as an independent organization, and its tip-management platform is not connected to Winnipeg Police Service systems.

Our foremost concern is the safety and security of Winnipeg residents who may be impacted. Public trust is essential to the success of any reporting platform, and we recognize the importance of maintaining confidence in the security and confidentiality of information shared by members of the public.

Our service has been made aware that some data related to Winnipeg was included in the breach. As such, the Winnipeg Police Service has suspended its use of Crime Stoppers while we review the information that has become available and assess the additional safeguards and security measures being implemented by Crime Stoppers and its service providers.

Non-emergency crime tips can be submitted through the Winnipeg Police Service online reporting system. If you are providing a crime tip and have concerns for your personal safety as a result of providing that information, please contact the Winnipeg Police Service Crime Tip Line at 204-986-6178. If you require immediate police assistance, call 911.

Callers may request not to provide personal details over the phone, and where feasible, those requests will be accommodated.

We recognize the important role Crime Stoppers has played in supporting community safety and investigations over many years and appreciate the seriousness with which it is approaching this matter.

Questions regarding the breach, the scope of any affected information, and measures taken in response should be directed to Crime Stoppers.
