Major Crimes arrest wanted male, seize loaded firearm: C26-250161

The Winnipeg Police Service arrested Nejib Abdulrished HASSAN (27), on October 3, 2026, in connection to a January 31, 2022, aggravated assault shooting in the 1100 block of Portage Avenue.

On January 31, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a male suspect was present in the lobby of an apartment building in the 1100 block of Portage Avenue when the 30-year-old male victim exited the elevator into the lobby. The suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim, causing life-altering injuries. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation and subsequently identified HASSAN as the suspect. Investigators also learned that HASSAN and the victim were previously known to one another. On February 11, 2022, investigators obtained a warrant for his arrest for aggravated assault.

In the early morning hours of October 3, 2026, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team and the Canine Unit, investigators located HASSAN in the rear lane of the 600 block of Portage Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident.

Following his arrest, officers located and seized a loaded 9mm Taurus handgun concealed in his waistband.

HASSAN was arrested on the strength of the warrant and additionally charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession pf a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order

He was detained in custody.
