A 23-year-old woman has been charged with Second Degree Murder following a fatal stabbing in downtown Winnipeg.

On July 28, 2026, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service officers responded to the 300 block of Portage Avenue after receiving a report that a woman had been stabbed.

Attending Central District General Patrol officers located an adult female suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries. She was transported to hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries. The suspect had fled the area before police arrived.

The deceased has been identified as 58-year-old Helen Annie SPENCE, a member of Grand Rapids First Nation, who had been residing in Winnipeg.

Following an investigation by the Homicide Unit, Shante Trinity PAUL, 23, was identified as the suspect.

PAUL was arrested without incident during the early morning hours of July 29 and has been charged with Second Degree Murder.

She remains in custody.
