Spring melt and severe storms can cause sudden surges in water levels across rivers and waterways. When this happens, fast‑moving water, strong currents, and hidden debris, including roots, logs, and other hazards normally visible at lower water levels, can create dangerous conditions for anyone on or near the water.
Following heavy rainfall this week, the Winnipeg Police Service is urging the public to use extra caution whether you’re boating, paddling, or walking along the riverbank.
Full safety guidelines and seasonal updates can be found in the River Patrol section of the Winnipeg Police Service website.
This season, expect to see the WPS Marine Unit on local rivers engaging with the public and promoting safe boating and waterway practices. Their goal is simple: a safe and successful boating season for everyone.
