Commercial business robbed at gunpoint. One man in custody: C26-92491

On April 22, 2026, just before 12:30 p.m., West District General Patrol officers, with the assistance of the Canine Unit (K9) arrested a 27-year-old man while he was walking on Portage Avenue approaching Vernon Road.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation. Investigators determined that the man had entered into a commercial business in the 2500 block of Portage Avenue brandishing a handgun, threatening to harm staff. The man stole merchandise as well as an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the area. An airsoft pistol and a pair of brass knuckles were seized from the man at the time of his arrest.

Derin Jr HANNINEN, (27), had been charged with the following:

  • Armed Robbery using a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x 2

He was detained in custody.
