On the evening of March 26, 2026, a teen was taken into custody after an adult man was assaulted with a knife in the 400 block of University Crescent.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., a 17-year-old suspect and a 32-year-old man attended the University of Manitoba Recreation Services when, without warning or provocation, the suspect produced a knife and assaulted the victim before fleeing on foot. Witnesses provided first aid until Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel arrived. The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable.

West District General Patrol officers arrived and were flagged down by University of Manitoba security, who directed them to a Winnipeg transit bus the suspect had boarded while attempting to leave the area. Officers located the suspect and took him into custody without incident.

The youth was turned over to the Major Crimes Unit. Investigators determined the suspect and victim are known to each other, and the assault was not random. Neither individual is affiliated with the university.

The 17-year-old has been charged with Assault with a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon. He was detained in custody.
