Convenience store robbery update – security guard arrested: C26-47405/R26-11228

Update:

The Major Crimes Unit continued its investigation regarding the robbery that occurred at a convenience store in the 200 block of Portage Avenue on February 28.

On March 2, at 6:44 p.m., investigators arrested the 23-year-old security guard involved in the incident without incident.

Through the investigation, it was learned that the 46-year-old man who was arrested for his involvement at the time of this incident had attended the store at 12:41 p.m. and attempted to leave with stolen merchandise when the security guard intervened and blocked his exit. The 46-yr-old threatened to kill and assaulted the security guard.

The security guard attempted to take control of the suspect which resulted in him assaulting the 46-yr-old man with the use of brass knuckles (a prohibited weapon). He proceeded to tackle the victim and continued the assault while on the ground. During the assault, the security guard also threatened to kill the 46-year-old. The assault was captured on video and reported to police the following day prompting a secondary investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.

The security guard faces charges of Assault with a Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon, and Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm.

He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

As previously released:

On February 28, 2026, at 1:05 p.m., members of the Downtown Foot Patrol responded to a disturbance at a convenience store in the 200 block of Portage Avenue. A 46-year-old man detained by an on-duty security guard was turned over to officers and placed under arrest.

Through their investigation, officers learned that the man had attended the store at approximately 12:50 p.m., concealed items valued at approximately $95 on his person, and was attempting to leave without paying. The security guard, a 23-year-old man, intervened and attempted to stop the suspect from exiting the store, resulting in a physical altercation. Police were contacted and officers arrived shortly thereafter.

Foot Patrol officers arrested the suspect, spoke with the involved parties and walked the 46-year-old man to police headquarters where he was processed. He faces charges of Robbery and Utter Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm.

He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

On March 1, the WPS was made aware of videos circulating on social media regarding the security guard’s involvement during the incident. This was learned after the arrested male had been processed and released. As a result of learning this information, a subsequent investigation was immediately initiated and tasked to the Major Crimes Unit.
