On February 28, 2026, at 1:05 p.m., members of the Downtown Foot Patrol responded to a disturbance at a convenience store in the 200 block of Portage Avenue. A 46-year-old man detained by an on-duty security guard was turned over to officers and placed under arrest.
Through their investigation, officers learned that the man had attended the store at approximately 12:50 p.m., concealed items valued at approximately $95 on his person, and was attempting to leave without paying. The security guard, a 23-year-old man, intervened and attempted to stop the suspect from exiting the store, resulting in a physical altercation. Police were contacted and officers arrived shortly thereafter.
Foot Patrol officers arrested the suspect, spoke with the involved parties and walked the 46-year-old man to police headquarters where he was processed. He faces charges of Robbery and Utter Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm.
He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
On March 1, the WPS was made aware of videos circulating on social media regarding the security guard’s involvement during the incident. This was learned after the arrested male had been processed and released. As a result of learning this information, a subsequent investigation was immediately initiated and tasked to the Major Crimes Unit.
