On June 27th, 2025, at 5:13 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a male being assaulted by a group of people in the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue.

Upon police arrival, the suspects had already left. Police requested an ambulance for the man in his 20s and he was medically cleared by paramedics. He declined further police involvement in the assault investigation.

Due to his level of intoxication and for his safety, he was detained by police under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act (I.P.D.A.). He was taken to the detoxification centre at the Main Street Project, medically cleared again and lodged.

Around five hours later, at 10:39 a.m., while still lodged under the I.P.D.A., the man experienced a medical emergency. The centre called 911 and he was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.
