On June 13, 2025, at approximately 7:36 p.m., a teenager was seriously injured during a robbery involving a machete in the St. James area by a group of unidentified youths.

While in the area of Portage Avenue and St. James Street on an unrelated call, Winnipeg Fire Paramedics noticed a group of youths gathering nearby. They witnessed one youth assault another with a machete and immediately requested police assistance.

West District patrol officers attended the scene and located the injured teen, who sustained significant injuries. Officers learned that the teen also had his personal property stolen during the assault. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable condition, where he was treated for life-altering injuries.

Several other youths were involved in the robbery, and police are working to identify everyone involved.

The Major Crimes Unit (MCU) has taken over the investigation and are asking anyone who was in the area and believes they may have witnessed the assault to come forward.
