Fitness Facility Locker Safety

Released: June 18, 2025 at 2 p.m.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) would like to remind gym-goers to take extra precautions when securing their belongings. This comes following a recent increase in locker break-ins at fitness facilities.

There were nearly 20 reported locker break-ins at fitness facilities across Winnipeg between April 28 and May 30. While these took place across Winnipeg, there were a number of cases specific to the Leila North neighbourhood.

Items being stolen include wallets, keys, ID, cellphones and other personal belongings. In one instance, keys stolen from a locker were used to access a vehicle in the parking lot.

Tips to keep your personal belongings safe:

  • Always secure your locker with a high quality lock
  • If possible, leave valuable items like wallets or purses at home
  • Opt to keep items like keys or cell phones on your person when possible
  • Consider a locker with greater visibility; avoid back corners or bays that are less travelled
  • Report suspicious activity, such as individuals lingering in locker rooms, to facility staff
  • Report any thefts to police and facility staff

By taking small but effective security measures, gym-goers can take proactive steps to minimize risk. Staying vigilant and using secure storage methods can help ensure a worry-free workout experience.
