Commercial Robbery/Arson – Arrest: C25-101572

On May 11, 2025 at approximately 5:54 p.m., a 45-year-old male was observed lighting a fire in a garbage bin in the area of 300 Portage Avenue. Nearby security personnel were able to extinguish the fire. The suspect proceeded to Carlton Street near Portage Avenue and damaged property belonging to the City of Winnipeg, valued at approximately $100.

At approximately 6:11 p.m., the suspect attended to a retail store in same block of Portage Avenue and attempted to purchase items without sufficient funds. The suspect became irate and discharged the stores fire extinguisher towards store employees and stole items from the store valued at approximately $130. There were no injuries as a result of the incidents.

Central District Foot Patrol officers responded and located and arrested the suspect in the area of Portage Avenue and Hargrave Street without further incident.

A 45-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:

  • Robbery
  • Arson Causing Damage to Property
  • Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment 

He has been detained in police custody and is awaiting disposition.
