On May 10, 2025, at approximately 6:35 p.m., North District Community Support Unit officers of the Winnipeg Police Service conducting proactive patrols initiated a traffic stop on a taxi regarding observed Highway Traffic Act (HTA) infractions.

Assisted by North District General Patrol, officers conducted the traffic stop in the 100 block of McKenzie Street, where one of the three occupants attempting to avoid contact with the officers exited the taxi and began walking away. The male was quickly apprehended and a search of his person for officer safety produced a loaded Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine containing approximately 17 rounds of ammunition.

The male was placed under arrest and the firearm was seized as evidence and secured.

A 25-year-old male of Cross Lake, MB., faces the following charges:

  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possession of a Weapon

He was detained in police custody awaiting disposition. The two remaining occupants were not charged with an offence.
