Protect Yourself from Vehicle Break-ins

Released: April 16, 2025 at 11:32 a.m.

In response to a recent spike in car break-ins, we're reminding citizens to ensure all belongings are removed from your vehicle when you arrive at your destination. These crimes are opportunistic in nature, and often occur when personal items have been left inside the car.

Thefts from vehicles are more likely to occur in areas with many vehicles and minimal pedestrian traffic, like back lanes or apartment block parking areas. Regardless of location, the risk is increased in any place where a vehicle is left running, unattended, unlocked, or with valuables in plain view.

Give would-be thieves a reason to by-pass your vehicle as a potential target:

  • Remove valuables and bags from view. This includes loose change and electronic devices.
  • Don't leave personal identification, vehicle registration, insurance documents or credit cards in your vehicle.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
  • Always close windows and lock doors.
  • Never leave your car, house keys or garage opener in your vehicle.
  • Park in well-lit areas with pedestrian traffic.

Even if you believe the belongings to be of little value, a thief will break a window for a simple hat or spare change. Don't give them a reason; ensure all valuables are removed.
