In March 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Property Crime Unit initiated an investigation into numerous thefts of property incidents within the city and identified an adult male suspect believed to be involved.
The following is a synopsis of the incidents leading to the investigation:
- February 16: A 2023 Chevrolet Equinox in the 350 block of St. Mary was broken into and a wallet containing credit cards was stolen from within. The suspect fraudulently used the victim’s credit card at a convenience store on Corydon Avenue the same morning.
- February 22: A 2009 Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from the R.M. of Headingley
- Between February 28 and March 1: Two license plates were removed and stolen from a vehicle in the 1300 block of Dudley Street.
- Prior to March 1: Two license plates were removed and stolen from a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado from an unknown location.
- March 1: The suspect attended a gas station in the 300 block of Osborne Street and fled after stealing approximately $140 in gasoline.
- March 4: Two license plates were removed and stolen from a vehicle in the 300 block of Gertrude Avenue.
- March 5: The stolen 2009 Chevrolet Silverado containing multiple stolen license plates was recovered within the city.
- March 25: A 2004 BMW 325CI was stolen from a residential property in the 200 block of Cordova Street.
- March 31: A 2023 Toyota Rav4 was broken into in the 1300 block of Pembina Highway and property valued at approximately $9,800 was stolen from within.
- March 31: A 2013 Nissan Rogue was stolen from a back lane in the 500 block of Broadway Street
- Between April 2 and April 3: Two license plates were removed and stolen from a vehicle in the sub-100 block of Roslyn Road
- April 3: A license plate was removed from a vehicle near James Street and James Avenue and replaced with another.
- Prior to April 4: A license plate was removed and stolen from a 2015 Infiniti Q50 at an unknown location.
- April 4: A 2009 GMC Acadia was broken into in the 1800 block of Pembina Highway and a quantity of liquor was stolen from within.
- April 4: A 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee was broken into in the 1300 block of Pembina Highway and property valued at approximately $8,400 was stolen from within.
- April 4: A 2014 Nissan Rogue was broken into in the 100 block of Sherburn Street and personal property was stolen from within. Both license plates were also removed and stolen.
- April 4: At approximately 2:30 p.m., patrolling officers located the stolen Nissan Rogue abandoned in the 600 block of Sara Avenue. Numerous stolen license plates and property related to several of the aforementioned incidents.
- April 5: Two suspects were observed attending a retail store in the 3200 block of Portage Avenue in the stolen BMW.
- April 5: A license plate was removed and stolen from a 2007 Infiniti M35X at an unknown location.
- April 5: The stolen BMW was recovered unoccupied in the sub-100 block of Balmoral Street.
On April 11, 2025, West District General Patrol officers arrested a suspect regarding the BMW in the 3200 block of Portage Avenue without incident and located a knife concealed on his person. Stolen identification documents including business cheques were located within a backpack. Some of the business checks were also determined to have been forged and cashed in for money by this suspect.
Reece Alexander TURNBULL, 29, of Winnipeg, is charged with the following offences:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Possession of an Identity Document x 4
- Possession of a Forged Document with Ident
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 6
On April 13, 2025, a second suspect was arrested when general patrol officers came across him while investigating an unrelated incident. Officers located a knife on his person along with approximately 6 Grams of Methamphetamine. (Estimated Street Value = $300).
Property Crime investigators linked both suspects to the above-mentioned incidents.
Daniel Conrad SEARCY, 36, of Winnipeg is charged with the following offences:
- Possession of a Weapon
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 x 4
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 x 9
- Theft Under $5,000
- Fraud Under $5,000
- Use of Credit Card
- Possession of Scheduled Substance – Methamphetamine
- Possession of Break-In Instruments
- Warrant (Fail to Appear Ident)
SEARCY and TURNBULL were detained in custody.
The Property Crime Unit reminds the public that property documentation and the submission of theft incident reports facilitate investigations in identifying victims and substantiates theft charges. In addition, reporting and documentation increases the chances of the return of stolen property to their rightful owners.
