On February 25, 2024 at approximately 12:23 a.m., North District General Patrol officers of the Winnipeg Police Service observed several occupants of a taxi cab not wearing seatbelts and conducted a traffic stop in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue.
While identifying the occupants to address the HTA infractions, one adult male was found to be breaching curfew conditions and a second male was found to have an active warrant of arrest in his name. Both were placed under arrest on the strength of their warrants and as officers removed them from the vehicle, a firearm part was observed in plain view within the vehicle.
Officers secured the firearm part and upon further inspection noted it to be a loaded improvised firearm (Zip gun) with a chambered .22 calibre round of ammunition. Officers made the firearm safe and seized it as evidence.
A 25-year-old male of Winnipeg faces the following charges:
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x 2
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Condition Order x 2
- Warrant - Fail to Comply with Probation Order
A 33-year-old male of Winnipeg faces the following charges:
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x 2
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 3
Both were detained in custody.
A 27-year-old female of Winnipeg faces a charge of Possession of a Weapon. She was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
