Warming Up Your Car? Keep This in Mind…

Released: February 19, 2025 at 3:21 p.m.

To help protect your vehicle from theft this winter, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. NEVER Leave Keys in an Unattended Vehicle: While it might be tempting to start your car and let it warm up while you stay inside, this is one of the easiest ways for thieves to steal your vehicle. Instead, start your car only when you're ready to drive.
  2. Use a Remote Starter: If you prefer to warm up your car before driving, consider using a remote starter. This allows you to start your car from inside your home without leaving it unattended. Just make sure your car remains locked.
  3. Lock Your Car: Always lock your car, even if you're just stepping away for a moment. An unlocked car is an easy target for thieves.
  4. Park in Well-Lit Areas: Whenever possible, park your car in well-lit areas or in a garage. Thieves are less likely to target vehicles that are in visible, well-lit locations.
  5. Install Anti-Theft Devices: Consider installing anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks, immobilizers, or GPS trackers. These can deter thieves and make it more difficult for them to steal your car.

By following these tips and being mindful of your vehicle's security, you can help reduce the risk of car theft this winter. Remember, staying vigilant and taking precautions can go a long way in keeping your car safe.

Stay warm and stay safe, Winnipeg!
