In November 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit entered into an investigation regarding a serious assault that occurred approximately one year earlier in 2023 but was not previously reported.

Investigators learned that in early December 2023, a female victim in her 20s, was in the company of two males at a residence in the 200 block of College Avenue. All parties were known to each other and believed to be part of the criminal drug subculture.

During a disagreement, the suspects amputated one of the victim’s fingers. She accessed medical treatment but a police report was not made at the time.

The Major Crimes Unit continued to investigate.

On January 6, 2025, police attended Milner Ridge Correctional Centre and arrested 28-year-old, Maxim Dale GARNEAU of Winnipeg on the strength of a warrant for Aggravated Assault. As he was in custody on un-related matters, he remained in custody.
