Update:

On January 2, 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Homicide Unit arrested a female in the 900 block of Arlington Street, for the murder of 50-year-old Byron Frederick MOOSE on December 27, 2024.

33-year-old Anissa Christy POMPANA, has been charged with Second Degree Murder and detained in custody.

Investigators determined the deceased victim and the accused were not previously known to each other, but met at a mutually known location. They left this location together and were in the 900 block of Dugas Street when the victim was fatally assaulted by the accused.

The Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate.

As previously released:

At approximately 4:36 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was notified by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service that they were providing emergency medical care to an adult male in the 900 block of Dugas Street. The victim had sustained injuries consistent with being assaulted. 

East District General Patrol officers responded to the scene and confirmed that an adult male victim had been assaulted and was suffering from serious injuries. The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. 

The deceased victim has been identified as 50-year-old, Byron Frederick MOOSE, a member of the South Indian Lake community/ O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation. Notifications to family have been made and the investigation is continuing.
