Stolen Vehicles/Break & Enter – Arrests

On January 4 and 5, 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to two separate incidents where vehicles took off from police and were later confirmed to be stolen.

On January 4 at approximately 10:45 p.m., General Patrol officers from the North District were patrolling near King/Flora when a vehicle was observed driving erratically at a high rate of speed and disobeying the Highway Traffic Act (traffic lights).

With the assistance of Air1, the vehicle was observed westbound on Logan Avenue then entered a parkade at the casino on McPhillips Street.

 

After a short foot pursuit, two individuals were taken into police custody.The vehicle was confirmed stolen.

The driver, a 30-year-old male, Jonas Donat SABISTON of Winnipeg was charged with the following offences:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited by Order Under Criminal Code
  • Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited Pursuant to Federal or Provincial Act
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000

He was detained in custody.

A 24-year-old female of Winnipeg, is facing a breach related to a curfew condition and remains in custody at this time.

 

Break & Enter/Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon

On January 5, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a Ford F350 truck with a Saskatchewan licence plate attended to a dealership in the 3900 block of Portage Avenue. An individual exited the truck and broke into a construction trailer on site and left. The break-in was observed by security and police were contacted.

General Patrol from the West District located the truck in a parking lot west on Portage, near the perimeter and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle fled and subsequently rammed the police vehicle, refusing to stop. It continued to flee and crossed into oncoming traffic, and rammed a second police vehicle before it was stopped. Nobody was injured during these collisions.

A 25-year-old male, from Lampman, Saskatchewan was taken into custody and is facing the following charges:

  • Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon x 3
  • Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Possession of Break In Instrument(s)
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 (vehicle confirmed stolen from Moosejaw, SK on December 31, 2024)
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
  • Break & Enter with Intent – Place
  • Possession of Scheduled Substance – Methamphetamine

He remains in custody at this time.
