On January 1, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was contacted by a concerned citizen who observed a man jumping out of a moving vehicle that subsequently drove away.

A description of the vehicle, which included a Saskatchewan licence plate, was provided, and the RCMP was notified.

Police spoke to the victim, a man in his 40s, who reported that he had arranged to meet with a male acquaintance to sell a pair of high-end shoes. Upon arrival, the victim entered the male’s vehicle to complete the transaction. However, a second male, who had been hiding in the backseat, surprised the victim at gunpoint, and the vehicle sped off with the victim trapped inside. As the vehicle accelerated, the victim managed to escape by jumping out of the moving car. The shoes also fell from the vehicle during his escape.

Although the victim sustained minor injuries, he declined medical attention.

Several hours later, with assistance from the Saskatchewan RCMP, the two suspects were located driving near Whitewood, Saskatchewan, and were taken into custody.

On January 2, the two accused were turned over to the Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit.

Muhammad Ehan ZAWAR (20) and Syed Maaz ALI (20), both from Saskatoon, were charged with:

  • Armed Robbery using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm
  • Forcible Confinement

They were detained in custody.
