In October 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Child Abuse Unit entered into a sexual exploitation investigation after receiving a report from a youth custody facility regarding a female Corrections Officer believed to be involved in the sexual assault of an incarcerated youth.
The investigation revealed that beginning in February 2024, the Corrections Officer, employed as a Juvenile Counsellor at the facility, formed a relationship with the victim. The relationship continued and resulted in multiple sexual assaults against the victim within the facility. Staff became aware of the incidents and the WPS was notified.
The Child Abuse Unit continued its investigation and on December 21, arrested the 26-year-old female without incident at her residence. She faces charges of Sexual Assault and Sexual Exploitation and was released with conditions prohibiting access to anyone under 18, as directed by the Criminal Code.
