On December 19, 2024, at approximately 2:41 a.m., Central District General Patrol officers responded to the 400 block of Furby Street for the report of a male and a female who were arguing. One of the parties was armed with an edged weapon and attempting to stab the other.
Officers attended and were met by a male outside the residence, who was armed with an edged weapon. The male refused to follow repeated verbal direction by officers and began walking towards them, resulting in a use of force encounter which included the deployment of a conducted energy weapon (taser). As a result of the taser deployment, the male fell to the ground where he was taken into custody.
The male was transported to the hospital as a precaution and released on an Undertaking, while he waited to be treated by hospital staff.
On December 20, 2024, at approximately 11:20 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service learned that the male had sustained tibia and fibula fractures to one of his legs.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.
