On December 15, 2024 at approximately 7:50 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a call regarding a security guard being assaulted in the 300 Block of York Avenue.

Members of the Downtown Foot Patrol, who were patrolling the area, responded to the call for service. They located a 51-year-old security guard suffering from injuries as a result of being assaulted. The investigation revealed that a 20-year-old male suspect attempted to enter the above location through the Winnipeg Walkway System (Skywalk) Carlton Street entrance, but was denied entry by security guards due to his agitated behaviour. He was also believed to be intoxicated by an unknown substance. He became aggressive toward security and was asked to leave, and continued to be confrontational.

The victim attempted to assist his co-workers in de-escalating the suspect, at which time he was physically assaulted by the suspect, causing him to fall to the ground. His glasses were ripped off his face and stomped on, and his nametag torn off. The pin from the nametag was then used in an attempt to stab the victim.

Attending Foot Patrol officers located the suspect and took him into custody without incident. The victim was treated by paramedics for minor injuries and released.

Stephan PONICAPPO, 20 years of Winnipeg, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Mischief Under $5000 Obstruct in Enjoyment

He was detained in custody.
