Stay Alert, Stay Safe: Protect Yourself from Opportunistic Robbery

Released: November 13, 2024 at 2:08 p.m.

Lately, we've seen an increase in random street robberies. These are often crimes of opportunity.

Thieves are more likely to target individuals who are distracted and unaware of their surroundings.

That's why it’s more important than ever to stay alert when you're out and about.

When you're walking, avoid getting absorbed in your phone or plugging in your earbuds. While it's fine to listen to music or take calls, these distractions can make you an easy target. You should always be able to hear what's happening around you – especially if someone is approaching or if something feels off.

If you must wear headphones or earbuds, keep the volume low enough that you can still hear ambient sounds. It could be the difference between staying safe and becoming a target.

A few additional tips to reduce your risk:

  • Keep valuables out of sight: Thieves are often drawn to visible electronics, jewelry, or cash. If possible, keep these items concealed.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, take note of the area around you and be ready to take action.
  • If you are the victim of a robbery: Remember that no item is worth your safety. Hand over your belongings calmly, avoid sudden movements, and never try to fight back.

Your personal safety is the priority. Stay alert and stay safe!
