Protecting Your Vehicle from Break-Ins

Released: October 16, 2024 at 2:02 p.m.

Car break-ins remain an all-too-common occurrence throughout the year. As we transition into the fall and regular activities ramp up, our Community Support Officers are observing an increase in criminal activity.

Thieves are targeting vehicles that appear to hold valuables. Recent reports indicate that items such as gym bags, laptops, purses, and wallets left in plain view in vehicles are particularly appealing to smash-and-grab criminals. Additionally, in some cases, tap-enabled debit and credit cards are stolen, leading to further victimization.

Our message is clear: always lock your vehicle and remove any valuables when parked – whether at home, school, on the street, or in a shopping centre.

These crimes are occurring across Winnipeg. Community Support Officers, equipped with information from our Crime Analysts and Divisional Coordinators, are engaged in intelligence-driven enforcement.

Your reports of these incidents are crucial. The information you provide enables our officers to strategically deploy resources to deter and apprehend offenders. Together, we can work to reduce these crimes and protect our community.
