On August 30, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service arrested a male involved in two stabbings in the Downtown area.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., police initially responded to the report of a male who had been stabbed in the park at Portage/Carlton.
Central District Officers provided emergency medical care, including the use of a chest seal and the victim, in his 50s, was transported to hospital in critical condition, underwent treatment and was stabilized.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to a second stabbing at Graham/Garry. A male victim in his 20s was seriously injured, and officers provided emergency medical care. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and has been upgraded to stable condition. The suspect left the area on a bus.
The suspect eventually got off the bus and was on foot. General Patrol members and the following Specialty Units (Tactical Support Team, K9 Unit, and AIR1) searched the area and located the suspect in the river by Point Douglas. He eventually swam back to the bank and was safely taken into custody.
He was turned over to the Major Crimes Unit, and investigators determined that both incidents were related. The accused and the first victim were known to each other and were consuming alcohol at a park by Portage/Carlton. An altercation took place, and the victim was stabbed in the upper body. When the accused fled, two individuals followed and confronted him at Graham/Garry. He then stabbed one of these males in the abdomen and left the area.
A 38-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences:
- Aggravated Assault x 2
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking
He was detained in custody.
Major Crimes is continuing the investigation.
