The Winnipeg Police Service previously released information regarding a grandparent scam investigation that resulted in the arrest of an Edmonton man. While three elderly victims were identified in August, 2026, an additional victim has reported being defrauded of more than $14,000.
Between August 17 and August 18, 2026, an adult in their 80s, received phone calls from someone pretending to be their grandson. The caller indicated they were in trouble and required money for bail. The victim agreed to pay, and a man came to their residence several times and picked up money, credit cards and jewellery.
As the result of an ongoing investigation regarding grandparent scams, the suspect was believed to be 29-year-old Daniel WARREN, of Edmonton, Alberta.
On August 23, 2026, investigators executed a search warrant on a vehicle, seizing electronics, jewellery and gift cards, linking WARREN to the recent fraud investigations.
On October 5, 2026, members of the Financial Crime Unit attended the Winnipeg Remand Centre and arrested WARREN on the strength of a warrant for the following offences:
- Fraud Over $5,000
- Unauthorized Use of Credit Card
He remained in custody.
