On October 5, 2026, just after 4:30 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service officers working special duty at a retail business in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue, responded to a commercial theft. Information was received that a man had stolen retail merchandise and had fled the premises on foot.

Officers located the man outside the retail business. A foot pursuit ensued resulting in the man fleeing through the parking lot and across Portage Avenue where he was struck by a motor vehicle.  

The man was arrested and was taken for medical assessment where he was medically discharged and subsequently released from custody.

As this matter is deemed a serious injury pursuant to The Police Services Act, the Civilian Director of the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was notified.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.
