The Winnipeg Police Service has charged 33-year-old Matthew Joseph MARRIOTT, following an investigation into a weapon-related assault that occurred on July 4, 2026, at a licensed establishment in the 1000 block of Henderson Highway.
The incident began shortly before midnight, when a dispute over a VLT ticket escalated inside the establishment where the suspect discharged a canister of bear spray at a 36-year-old man and into the bar area.
The suspect moved into the parking lot, where he chased several victims while pointing what was later determined to be a Sig Sauer MCX air-powered rifle and making violent threats. The suspect fled the area after discarding a backpack containing the air-powered rifle, bear spray canister, knife, and a small quantity of suspected heroin. The backpack was recovered by responded East District General Patrol officers.
The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and identified MARRIOTT as the suspect. He was arrested on September 10 without incident.
MARRIOTT is charged with the following:
- Use of Imitation Firearm During Commission of an Indictable Offence
- Point a Firearm x 3
- Assault with a Weapon
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition x 3
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x 3
- Possession of a Weapon x 3
- Utter Threats – Damage Property
- Possession of Scheduled Substance – Heroin
MARRIOTT was detained in custody.
