Armed suspect arrested following disturbance on Portage Avenue: C26-23791

On January 30, 2026, an 18-year-old suspect was arrested in a building on Portage avenue after entering with a knife and assaulting a man.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received several calls reporting a suspect armed with a knife causing a disturbance in the 300 block of Portage Avenue. The disturbance escalated, and a man walking through the building was knocked to the ground by the suspect. He was able to disarm the him of the knife, and several bystanders stepped in to help until police arrived. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated by members of the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service.

At 5:36 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers arrived and located the suspect, who was uncooperative and continued to be violent. Officers deployed a Conductive Energy Weapon (Taser) to safely take him into custody, and a knife was later seized.

The 18-year-old man is facing charges of Possession of a Weapon and Assault with a Weapon. He was released on an Undertaking.
