On January 1, 2026, around 2:45 p.m., officers from West District with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team, responded to a suspect boarding a transit bus following a commercial robbery reported moments earlier.

A man entered a fast-food restaurant in the 1500 block of Portage Avenue and demanded  money from the front till and threatened to shoot the employees.

The three employees ran to safety and the suspect circled around the counter and unsuccessfully attempted to open the cash register. He then entered the kitchen, and stole hamburgers and fries that were still cooking in frying pans. He exited the restaurant and boarded a transit bus where he proceeded to eat the food and tried to fight people on the bus. Nobody reported any assaults.

The bus had not travelled far, when it stopped and the suspect was taken into police custody. He was in possession of a stolen wallet.

Jonathan FONTAINE (29), was charged with the following offences:

  • Robbery
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000

He was detained in custody.
