Public Awareness regarding potential telephone scam

On September 1, 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Communication Centre received numerous reports from people who were contacted by telephone by individuals identifying themselves as “Winnipeg Police”. Call display also showed calls originating from the WPS non-emergency number “204-986-6222”.

Reports have been received from Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. The callers’ motives remain unclear at this time; however, in a few of the incidents, a request was made for personal information. 

Law enforcement agencies will never call you and request personal information or funds. Do not disclose any personal information about bank accounts, identification numbers, credit cards, or personal finances to anyone.

We are providing you this information as a safeguard against potential fraud that could result in the misuse of your personal information and financial loss.

If you or someone you know receives a call of this nature, please do not hesitate to contact our non-emergency line at 204-986-6222 to report the incident so that we can investigate the matter. In the event, a fraud attempt is suspected, you can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center.
