Retail theft thwarted by quick actions of officer, one man arrested: C25-202227

On August 27, 2025, shortly after 4:00 p.m., a member of the Winnipeg Police Service’s Central District Traffic Unit was flagged down by a staff member of a retail business in the 300 block of Donald Street for a shoplifting incident that was in progress.

Information received revealed that a man had entered the retail business, selected some store merchandise and fled the store without paying. The officer quickly leapt into action and was able to apprehend the man before he made his escape. While attempting to take arrest the man, he became resistant and began physically assaulting the officer. During the physical altercation, a knife from the man’s waistband fell to the ground. A citizen walking by saw the officer in distress and contacted police. Additional officers attended and the man was successfully taken into custody. The officer suffered minor injuries as a result of the physical altercation.

A 25-year-old man is facing the following charges:

  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Assault a Peace Officer
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order

The man was detained in custody.
