On September 10, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., West District General Patrol officers responded to the 300 block of Bridge Lake Drive for a report of a missing adult male who had been abducted the previous day.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation. In the early morning hours of September 13th, 2024, investigators, with assistance from the Tactical Support Team (TST), located a deceased male within a residence in the area of the 100 block of Bristol Avenue.

The deceased victim has been identified as 22-year-old male, Zeyad SHAMMO of Ontario. Family notifications have been made.

His death is considered a homicide, and two suspects that were known to the victim were identified by investigators and taken into custody with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team (TST).

Sonny BALEMBA (26) of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Extortion

Robert James CHAYKOWSKI (26) of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Extortion
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order x 4

They were both detained in custody.

The Major Crimes Unit is continuing with this investigation.
